SCAMMED AND UNSCAMMED
Like everyone over 80 I have had repeated attempts made on line to scam me. I’m guessing that this happens to people of all ages, but my age group, already bewildered by the Internet and paranoid about being fooled are anxious and easily fooled.
So when I got a $480 bill from WordPress (followed by a string of incomprehensible letters), the website where I post these daily accounts, I was not fooled. How could they be charging me $480 when I remembered paying only about $20 a month? And that string of unrelated letters showed that it wasn’t WordPress at all but some conman in Bangkok who was playing me for a sucker. I wouldn’t even have noticed that I had paid the $480 if I hadn’t been alerted by the Bank of America who had already tried to reach me twice to question the payment. Thank god for their alertness. I replied to the Bank of America asking them not to pay the amount and breathed a sign of relief. They replied that they had cancelled my Travel Rewards card and gone into dispute with WordPress and that I would have to let anyone whom I was paying monthly on that card that my card had been revoked and give them a new card.
My travel rewards card pays me 2% of everything I charge on it which can be used for any travel connected payments. It is part of my saving money to travel. I had recently collected $380 of this gift money to pay for the last trip to Germany, although with a nagging feeling of guilt. Who was paying for my free travel, was it from credit card fees, or more likely from those people who are barely getting by day to day and charging their groceries and paying 25% interest. Why was the Bank of America so eager to give me that card? I am inundated with similar offers. And I know that the reason for these offers is not to reward me with 2% back but to finagle me into wild spending that will result in 25% interest on my part, which I avoid by paying the card off every two weeks. So my 2% is well worth it to the Bank of AMerican if they can collect 25% on other people’s pain. I feel like I am complict in this robbery.
Anyway, I felt great relief to have avoided being scammed.
