CUCKOO CLOCK

When in Celle, Germany over a month ago I was looking for something to bring back that seemed very German. When I was in the US Army in Aschaffenburg, Germany, in 1960, where I met Kathe, my wife of 50 years, I bought a German souvenir in the PX, a wooden, carved cuckoo clock that seemed traditionally German.
But this was a new Germany, and the cuckoo clock that I saw this time, was made of red plastic with a white plastic cuckoo which popped out and cuckooed. I bought it to remind me every hour of Germany. But when I put in the batteries and hung it up on the wall several weeks ago it turned out to be a cuckoo cuckoo cuckooing randomly whenever it wanted and for as many times as it wanted with no discerable pattern. I still liked it and it still reminded me of Germany. It kept perfect time, just cuckooed crazily.
But yesterday I took down and opened the back and opened a plastic door and there on the door were instructions in English and Spanish. I’m guessing it was made in China. The instructions were odd but clear and I followed them. Now my cuckoo clock cuckoos on the hour and the correct number of times. I am content.

this made me laugh to imagine the random coo cooing!
