FUNDRAISER FOR CONNIE MOLLAND

On Thursday Susie and I went to a fundraiser for Connie Molland who is running for Madison County Commissioner, a committee who oversees Madison County. She is a progressive Democrat. Madison County is a rural, deep red Republican county. Driving around Madison County there are mobile homes along the highway and small farms in the hollows along the stream beds. People here have always been been poor with tobacco, an intensive crop that doesn’t need much land providing income. With the elimination of tobacco subsidies and the suppression of the use of tobacco this major source of income disappeared leaving people less well off. At the center of every small close knit community is an evangelical church, Missionary or Freewill Baptist, often with a fiery part time male preacher. In each community church and high school football tie the community together. This is Trump country.
Marshall is a progressive Democratic town with beautiful stores and restaurants. Connie is owner of FLOW, a store with beautiful hand made things, visited by tourists. My wife Kathe knitted articles for Flow and loved to visit.
When Helene swamped Marshall in ten feet of water, FlOW was badly damaged along with all the stores on Marshall’s Main Street. Connie was central in bringing Marshall back to life. She refused financial aid when others needed it more and helped lead Marshall’s restoration. She is a natural leader who believes strongly in service. She would make a great county commissioner if she can just be elected.
