MAY 25, MONDAY

MEMORIAL DAY MARSHALL

I discovered mid morning that there was a ceremony in front of the Madison County Court House honoring soldiers who had died in Americas many wars. The people in front of the courthouse with their hands over their hearts were traditional Madison county people, many of them descendants of the first European settlers. While cars and trucks cut through the ceremonies and with the occasional bursts of chatter from inside Zuma restaurant, whenever the door opened, people paying no attention to the solemn ceremony outside, the ceremony, led by the American Legion took center stage.

My video of most of the ceremony is down below. It was a rich mixture of patriotism, thanking god, and praising God for making us the greatest country on earth. I think this is the positive side of the values that MAGA feels are being threatened and are trying to defend even as half of America seems to have abandoned them. There weren’t many people there and many of them were old and the liberal side of Marshall was inside Zuma having a great time and ignoring them. I took photographs of the proud veterans but never revealed that I was one of them due to my two years army service in Germany. This double side of Marshall is one of the things I most like about living here.
