FAKE ADDICTIVE NEWS AND HONEST HEALTHY NEWS

It occurs to me that because of the Apple News and the Internet I get news from many sources about many more things than I did before. So in my case, instead of the Internet providing fake news, as it is reviled for doing, it provides me much more actual honest news.

The design of the internet means you get fake news if you want fake news and you get turned on by fake news but if you get turned on by real news, that is what you get. Don‘t blame the Internet, it is your choice. You get much more real news if you get turned on by real news. I have always thought of news as being addictive. It gives me a kind of high. So the question is whether you want addiction or you want something that enlivens you and sustains you. The MAGA news isn‘t sent to me because I haven‘t shown interest. I am not addicted to it, it turns me off. It isn‘t my flavor. So I am not offered fake news. But even with the people with whom I agree and whom I am going to vote for I know they are trying to feed my addiction to sensation and extremism. MSNBC does this most of all for me so I don‘t watch it. Sometimes I get warnings that MSNBC is in trouble and I better watch it. But it is MSNBC sending me the message and I don‘t open them because I know they are simply trying to addict me to increase their ratings. I agree with every thing they would say, but I am not going to act on any of it, I am just going to get high on being more furious at what I am already angry about. I don‘t need to be convinced, I don‘t need to be made any more angry even when it briefly like any addiction, makes me feel good.

It helps if I read the same views in black and white, not video, in the New York Times, delivered in a measured way. That riles me up much less that seeing the same thing on tv. On TV the person‘s strong emotions, the tone of their voice, the depth of their feelings, the disgust they feel, whip up my own strong emotions. I know that what MSNBC depends on is the advertising they insert between their comments. In the end the point of the broadcast is to get me to look at an advertisement for beer or dishwashing soap or a new car. It is the is my consumption that is being encouraged, consumption that pushes up the the gross national product and makes the economy hum. Consumption is king. MSNBC can be anti Trump but they can‘t be anti consumption, often the hosts chime right in and tell us how great this product or that is. They call these advertisers their sponsors, but what they are all doing is doing their best to rile me up to make me consume more and raise the standard of living. Most of the products don‘t actually improve my feeling of well being. To feel better I have to consuming a lot less beer or Coca Cola. Increasing my addiction to these drinks just makes me fat and miserable.

So there is addiction all the way around. But I find that through Apple News I am getting a lot more healthy printed news than I used to get and that it is fairly easy to avoid addictive news just by saying no.

There’s no just thing as independent news even Apple and MSMBC are horribly biased – even public television news – I do a simple thing – mute the TV as soon as adds or non-news starts to be discussed. You can do that too, it’s simple and nice.
