REMINDER OF NO KINGS DAY

Today I read about the harm the idea of make America great again is doing around the world. If being great means using your power to force other peoples and countries to do whatever you want them to do by raising high tariffs or replacing their leaders or removing their potential threat to you by obliterating them then this greatness seems to lead to the loss of all your friends and ever increasing threats to you, to us as Americans. It is Trump who is leading the way, but half of the United States voted for him and has been cheering him on. Our politicians have been telling us how great we are since our founding—the greatest country, the hardest workers, the best political system, the best economy—so often that we have come believe them and to feel entitled to all that we have with the need to protect ourselves from undeserving people trying to sneak into our country and to use our power to retain what we are entitled to. I’m sure the Romans felt that way and the British and the Germans and so many others whose so called empire building and greatness rose and fell. But today I feel it is a kind of built in corruption that will be our undoing. Everyone on earth is so tightly connected that it is our fellow humans worldwide that we should care about if we want to live well and to survive. Us is us, not us and them.
