FEBRUARY 16, MONDAY

THE BEACH

It was a gloomy, windy, cold day with no sun expected for the rest of our time here and with a snowstorm expected on Sunday the day after we leave. But we all bundled up and walked on the beach, where the waves broke and thumped, which reminded us both of the power of the ocean and its vastness, 4/5ths of the surface of the earth. The beach had a few people on it since today was President’s day, a national holiday, although a kind of pointless day since no particular person was being honored. Some people were here at the beach for the long weekend. But it was fun to be together, to walk together over the clean sand with most of the footprints washed away after the high tide.
