DOORS

Luis explained that when San Miguel became a UNESCO heritage city there were a number of requirements that went with this designation. One was that all the streets in the old city had to be cobblestone. Another was that all the buildings had to be painted in earth tones of pink, red and yellow. A third was that no building, except churches, could be higher than three stories. This meant that because San Miguel is built on an often steep hill that every rooftop had a great view and most restaurants had a rooftop section with views of the city. A fourth was that the exteriors of the buildings had to be kept plain with only small plaques with store names allowed. Often when you enter one of these plain doorways there is a courtyard inside with all kinds of decoration and objects displayed, But in order to lure people into a plain doorway to begin with the edges of the doors often have beautiful displays of flowers or other natural decorations. I was struck by the exterior of the buildings before I knew any of this. It is the reason that San Miguel de Allende is such a beautiful city and draws so many tourists. I began taking photographs of doors as soon as I arrived. Here are some of the doors of San Miguel de Allende.
