SAN MIGUEL WEDDING

Today the the major activity of the yoga group was to visit a recently discovered pyramid a short drive outside of town. There wasn’t room in the vehicles for Lucretia and me. Lucretia would spend the day vegetable shopping and cooking, I was relieved not to be climbing a pyramid. So off they went and Lucretia and I headed for the square at the center of town. I was hoping to see and photograph a Mexican wedding.

Luis, our guide yesterday, said that all of this weekend there would be wedding after wedding in the beautiful cathedral (Luis says the right term is parish church). I spent the morning on the square while Lucretia bought groceries and then cooked a stew for the group for the evening meal. One bride in a long white dress appeared with a retinue of photographers for photographs in front of the church, easy for an old man stand behind to photograph. But the wedding service, itself, took forever. I waited and waited, and then finally an uniformed mariachi band dressed in elegant white and gold began to play outside, the dressed up guests came streaming out and formed a large circle and then came the bride and groom with the crowd circled outside cheering and blowing streams of soap bubbles.
