JANUARY 6, TUESDAY

FIRST DAY

The first morning in our palatial rented house the sun was shining as it will be every day for the next three weeks. We had coffee brewed on the coffee maker which I kept hot on my Ember battery heated cup. The electricity is the same in Mexico and there is only an hour time change which makes getting started in the morning easier.

RUTH, MARTHA, KAITLIN, LUCRETIA

There are five of us here: Martha (the boss and yoga teacher); her childhood friend, Lucretia; Martha’s Black Mountain neighbor, Ruth and friend, Kaitlin. Ruth and Kaitlin were helpers on previous trips last year and so I knew them from my trip here last January. Lucretia, was my student helper on the work program at Warren Wilson College 40 years ago, and Martha went with a student group that I led to Sri Lanka and India 40 years ago. It was great fun being with all of them.

The first thing we did was to go across the street to a small hotel with a bright dining room where we had a sumptuous breakfast. I was so excited by the breakfast and photographing the food that I forgot to photograph the dining room.

Twelve yoga guests are arriving day after tomorrow so today the whole group went by taxi to the City Market a couple of miles away. It is the fanciest grocery I have ever seen. It is certainly more elegant and colorful and watched over than the Whole Foods in Asheville. Martha and I sat at a counter and share a bowl of tomato pumpkin ginger soup, a shrimp sandwich and something else exotic.
