NOVEMBER 18, TUESDAY

TOUCHED BY PATTI

Tuesday morning when I woke up before I left my recliner I looked at Apple news and happened on an interview of Patti Smith by Ezra Klein in the New York Times. It was a podcast, but instead of listening to it I read it. What struck me was that as I was reading it how good it made me feel. Looking back I was touched by how intensely Ezra Klein responded to her and how good the presence of Patti Smith made me feel. She was being interviewed about her new memoir, Bread of Angels, the story of her growing up that starts before her earlier memoir, Just Kids, and continues to the end of her life. I had started reading Bread of Angels last week but what I have read so far didn’t touch me in the way her presence in this podcast has. She is so open and unjudgmental and alive and imaginative as a child and adult. I can’t remember what she said, just the feeling of being in her very alive presence, a child open to the world at 79. Later when I looked at the comments of other readers I discovered that I was not alone. So many people were grateful to Ezra Klein for doing the interview and themselves felt enlivened by her presence.

I know this doesn’t convey much about her presence so I guess you will have to read or listen to the podcast and see what happens to you.
