JAMIE AGER FOR CONGRESS

Today Jamie Ager, running for Congress, as a representative in the House of Representatives, held a fundraiser at Zadie’s restaurant. There was music and free roasted chicken and other snacks and a huge crowd. Jamie graduated from Warren Wilson College where I taught though I never had him in class. He married a Warren Wilson student and the two of them run Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, where they grow cattle and sell high grade beef. When I first came to Warren Wilson the staff were often invited out to Hickory Nut Gap, by his grandparents Jamie and Elsbeth, to a big house with many fireplaces and a simple life. Jamie Clarke and his wife Elsbeth ran the place with a clan of Clarkes living all around them. Jamie Clarke, senior, was a two term Congressman representing Western North Carolina. So this gathering for his grandson trying to regain the congressional seat, was a high level political rally and yet I knew a number of people there. It was almost a family affair. Josh Copus who owns Zadie’s was a student at Warren Wilson and a friend of Jamie’s. He gave a rousing speech, Jamie’s son came forward on crutches from a horse riding accident and gave another rousing speech and then Jamie did the same. He didn’t sound like a politician at all. He said he is a Western North Carolinian first and a Democrat second. He is down to earth and warm and honest. I think he will be a great congressman if he can flip what has become a Republican seat, one that only four years ago was occupied for one term but the most bombastic, corrupt and unqualified congressman Western North Carolina has ever had, MAGA Madison Cawthorn.
