NOVEMBER 7, FRIDAY

LEGACY DINNER

Today was the Warren Wilson College Legacy Brunch. All of the retired staff were invited to a very nice meal and speeches about how well the college is doing after a period of declining enrollment and tightened budgets. During this process of tightening all the subjects and activities which I had done as a teacher were eliminated. Warren Wilson, out of necessity I guess, shifted from being a liberal arts college to a preparation for careers in this rapidly changing world, toward science and business. The news that the college was doing much better financially and retention and enrollment were up heartened us and the meal was very good. Also invited were people who have contributed financially to the college, the Bannerman Club, a group that all of us retirees were invited to join, simply by leaving a bequest to the college in our wills, probably more attractive to those of us without children than those whose children could use a little money themselves.

But it was really good to see old friends, though it was also another measure of the passing of time, all of us aging, and a reminder of old friends who were not there.

I had a great time.
