SPATIAL VIDEOS (2)
Two things have happened in the last year which make spatial videos and photos more useful.
The first is complete magic. Not only can I make spatial 3D photographs with my iPhone 16 Pro Max which can be seen in a fully immersive way on my Vision Pro, but through some kind of magic any photograph that I have taken in the last 30 years, photos of my grandchildren as kids, photographs of my wife, Kathe, who died four years ago when she was a young woman, any photograph that conveys a strong emotional message is enhanced and made much more intense when seen as a spatial 3D photograph. You are right in the presence of this person again. But while this is a very powerful effect it is still very difficult to share for the reasons I mentioned yesterday because it can only be seen on the Vision Pro.
But just this week there was a new Apple development with spatial photography that is finally easy to share on a flat screen with no goggles needed, that can not only be shared on an iPhone but that anyone can do if they have an iPhone, even an older iPhone back to the iPhone 12, any iPhone that can be updated to the latest operating system, IOS 26, which can be downloaded free over the Internet. When you look at any photograph you have taken when using IOS 26 you will see a small hexagon in the upper right above the photograph. When you touch that icon a strange purple line will slide over the photograph and turn it into a 3D photograph, or almost a 3D photograph, even though it appears to be 3D. You wont’ really notice a difference until you tilt the screen and then you will see that the person or object in the foreground seems disconnected from the background, allowing you to see around them. On the Vision Pro the 3D figure of the person seems like a well rounded person standing there beside you. On the iPhone the apparent separation of the background from the foreground gives the impression of being 3 dimensional without being a well rounded person.
The reason for this is of course that we see the world in three dimensions because each of our eyes, three inches apart, sees a slightly different perspective on the world around us, a skill that some birds, with their eyes on the sides of their heads can’t do. It also explains why the very expensive cameras that Apple uses to make their very immersive videos on their Apple TV website are so much more higher resolution and immersive feeling because their camera lenses are three inches or more apart.
But that explained, the new spatial effect on most iPhones with IOS 26 is really remarkable. How you get this 3D effect on a flat screen is beyond me. It is some kind of optical illusion that doesn’t even use the latest Apple artificial intelligence.
