OIL DEREK BAND
Again on the patio at Zadie’s listening to a band. As mentioned earlier I haven’t listened to popular bands since Eddie Fisher performed in the 50’s. And the only live concerts I’ve been to are Conway Twitty and the Twittybirds at Carowinds in Charlotte decades ago, and a performance by the Grateful Dead, which students talked me into attending, in Greensboro, also decades ago. The only time I’ve heard a band in Asheville was when Leonard Cohen and his band made an appearance maybe twenty years ago. That left enough of an impression that I bought the London Concert in the Apple Music store and then went with Susie on a pilgrimage to his unmarked house on the island of Hydra, Greece last year.
So I am complete ignorant about the current music scene in Asheville and Marshall and unable to enter any conversation about local music. But I really liked Oil Derek because they featured Ronald on the harmonica for a couple of songs. Believe it or not, I can play a tune by ear on the harmonica. I was invited to a musical evening at Ronald’s house about a month ago, a house with beautiful red rugs and a garden filled with ceramic figures. At some point Ronald was a potter. So when I’ve heard Ronald play the harmonica I’ve thought I could do that, too, and even bought a set of bluegrass harmonicas in every key on Amazon determined to practice in the privacy of my own house. I even mentioned what I was doing to Ronald, who didn’t laugh at me but did appear to be a little skeptical with good reason, because that is as far as I got. But Ronald is friendly and I like being in his presence and like listening to him accompany music on his harmonica as he is doing here.
