SEPTEMBER 12, FRIDAY

FRIENDSHIP

I drove to College View Drive, my old street, and got a ride with Don Collins and Paul Magnarella to McDonalds in Black Mountain where we joined Dusty Benedict, Phil Diehn, Sheldon Neuringer and Dean Kahl. We are all connected with Warren Wilson College and have known each other for years and years. But we have become friends through our weekly old man’s group on Friday mornings. Some of our original group, 12 years ago, Ron Wilson and Hugh Himan have died but we keep on going. It doesn’t matter what we talk about and if I am asked later what we talked about I can’t remember. It is being together that matters. Being together is the reason this is the one thing during the week that I never miss, unless I am traveling. It is not what is said but the presence of the other men who are there that matters. As far as I know none of us socialize with each other at other times during the week but yet we insist on being together on Fridays at 10 at McDonalds.
