WELLNESS VISIT
Today was my every four month wellness visit at Asheville Family Health. My general doctor for years has retired and been replaced by Dr. Cannon, a young man. The older I get the younger everyone else is. College students, who were once equals and fellow learners, now all seem like kids, and Dr. Cannon seems like a youngster. I’ve had the feeling on previous visits that at 88 my just walking in and being cheerful relieves him from having to worry about me or probe very much. I guess I am entering the miracle stage where just being able to walk and talk and smile, showing signs of life, is a major achievement. But this time I had several questions, including why my Qardio blood pressure device often tells me I have an irregular heart beat. This time he didn’t brush me off with a laugh and ordered an EKG where wires were attached all over my upper body. I expected to be zapped, but felt nothing and was told nothing. But he had the nurse glue a small heart beat monitoring device on my chest where it will stay for two weeks after which I detach it, mail it in and hope for the best.
