JULY 26, SATURDAY

BEETHOVEN OR WOMEN ARM WRESTLERS

Yesterday I made a choice between Beethoven’s Serenade in D major, Opus 25 for Flute, Violin and Viola and the outrageous women arm wrestlers at Mal’s Bar in Marshall. The arm wrestlers were at 6 and the concert in Swannanoa was at 7:30. I was going to give the arm wrestlers a whirl and then get in my car and catch the second half of the concert for which I had paid $130 for a season ticket.

The choice was almost made for me. When Susie and I got to the arm wrestling at 5:45 there was already a line outside, in fact, immediately after we got in line the event was sold out, only 100 or so people were allowed to attend according to the fire marshall. So I was about to leave for the Beethoven when Susie managed to get me a gift of a $25 electronic ticket that someone had extra, and then she managed to get a ticket for herself. The place was packed when we entered and excitement was sky high, but I managed to find a crevice right behind and close to the arm wrestling platform from which I could make spatial videos unimpeded. For two hours, as the crowd roared, I photographed one outrageous and bellowing arm wrestler after another in wild costumes as they made their theatrical entrances and then collapsed in defeat or crowed in victory. At 8 I was so exhausted from standing up and concentrating on photographing that I couldn’t last until the winner strutted her stuff. I went home dead tired having forgotten all about Beethoven.

These videos, alas not in 3D here, will give you a little of the atmosphere of the event.
