CASEY DRIESSEN FIDDLES AT ZADIES
Casey Dreissen plays the fiddle, the Appalachian name for the violin. Fiddle tunes are very different from classical violin music so the instrument, which looks the same, needs another name. Old time fiddle players didn’t use electronic amplification or accompaniament. There was no such thing. But now fiddle players can attach themselves to amplifiers and all sorts of devices. Casey had a whole lineup of devices with buttons on them that he would press on with his foot or lean over and twirl the knobs to make different effects, almost like an organist using his foot pedals.
I had thought he was playing Thursday evening and it wasn’t until I opened my window at 6:30 in the evening and heard his fiddle playing float across the river that I realized that it was tonight that he was playing. So I only got to the second half of his concert, some of which I have recorded here. It turned out that today was the birthday of the legendary fiddle player, Charlie Hicks, who in retirement often played in Zumas. Hicks died last year. His widow and a friend told stories about him. I have included that also.
