JUNE 2, MONDAY

IN CELLE

Last night Ginger, Hannah’s best friend since they were 6, arrived. She has spent the semester in Spain and has seen much of Europe during this time. But her train for the twenty minute ride from Hannover was cancelled three times and instead of arriving at 10 she arrived at 1 a.m.. So everyone slept late.

We had Frühstück (breakfast) at Kaffee Kiess, a favorite girlhood spot for my wife, Kathe, for Kathe’s brother Volker who lived his whole life in Celle and for Kathe’s father who began coming here for coffee shortly after World War II.

It is a very genteel and beautiful fachwerk building on a square lined with colorful old buildings. One of the stores is Huth’s Kaffee with special coffees and sweets that again was one of Kathe’s favorite stores.

After breakfast the women began browsing through Celle’s beautiful stores where I found a few things for my new apartment: pillow cases, a blue and green pad to put hot dishes on, a red Finnish paper rooster and a little white ceramic house that can be lighted inside.

Then I napped while they enjoyed Celle.
