MAY 18, SUNDAY

MEMPHIS TO MARSHALL

Susie and I left Memphis at 8:30 in the morning in Lauren’s very comfortable Acura for the 8 hour ride to Marshall on Interstate 40 through a tunnel of trees most of the way and nothing to report with the effort of letting go of my North Carolina and preparing to travel to Germany ahead of me.

But what struck me the most, again, because of my upcoming Germany trip was after the interstate the banality of haphazard roadside American roadside architecture, which looks like, and is, temporary buildings, boxes, with attempts at interesting facades to catch your attention. This contrasted the next day when landing in Hannover with the neat red roofed villages and towns surrounded by fields and forest with no temporary sprawl at all.
