RHODES COLLEGE GRADUATION

We were up early for the 9 a.m. graduation ceremony at Rhodes College, which was held on the lawn of the college in the shade of giant trees. My son Tom and Caroline went an hour and a half early to get good front row seats and were beaten there by half the crowd so that when the rest of us arrived we were seated in saved seats a long distance from the front platform. Luckily I had brought my heavy camera with a zoom that could reach the front. It took a long while for the 540 graduates and 100 faculty in their colorful robes to process in and then much, much, much longer to announce the special awards and honorary degrees and then forever to announce the names of individual graduates who went forward one by one to get their degrees. After the ceremony, graduates and families found each other as everyone milled around and took photographs. Refreshments were served, fruit and cheese, and champagne for everyone to offer toasts to the graduates.

Then we drove back to our Airbnb for a brunch that Kathy had arranged and then this old man took a nap while Hannah and five of her friends changed to bathing suits and swam in the back yard pool.
