MAY 4, SUNDAY

MAY POLE DANCE

Today was the last day of Marshall Magic, the opening up of Marshall after Helene six and a half months ago flooded every building on Main Street, washing the upstream buildings completely away leaving only basements and front steps. Now a number of stores and restaurants are open.

Chadd, covered with tattoos himself, who runs the Tattoo store, celebrated opening up again with a May Pole dance in his newly installed astroturf yard with a bandstand behind it. A band of local folks played music while women and girls circled the May Pole with colored streamers which wove a pattern on the pole as the dancers glided around in opposite lifting their streamers under or over the ribbons of people coming in the opposite direction. I am including a video of the festivities to give you a sense of what it looked like.

After the dance, Chadd, who was the raucous master of ceremonies, defended himself with a silver shield as children with colorful plastic guns shot plastic pellets in a wild attack on him.

This is the spirit of the town that I am moving to.
