CAPITOLA MILL

Today I drove to Marshall to look at the apartment that Susie and I chose on Thursday. It has 13 foot ceilings, wooden posts from the mill days, two very modern bathrooms, an open kitchen area with a center island, and two bedrooms, one of which can be an extension of the living area.

I can see why it is so hard to get old folks living by themselves to move from a house where they have lived with a spouse for thirty or more years. The work of downsizing seems daunting and saddening as you get rid of things you have loved together. And the uncertainty of the new place makes you want to hang on to the familiar.

But I am beginning to be excited. I have five weeks in which to move out and Susie and I have already disposed of a lot of stuff, much of it stuff that has been stored, unused and unwanted, for years. But the move to Marshall will be an adventure. I will be immersed in a community and will be in contact with people often, unlike in suburbia where I am now. My old friends will still be here. And I am realizing that this new apartment will be a better place to display textiles and objects that I have collected from around the world. There will be more display space and less storage space, which is good, which will make me continue to dispose of stuff. There will even be an available hot tub and a sauna and little swimming pool with a current and an exercise room and even a Spa and accupuncture, none of which I imagine ever using. But we’ll see. So I am ready to go.
