JARDIN BOTANICO

Today the yoga group visited the botanical bardens and I was invited along. To get to the botanical gardens, El Charco del Ingenio: Jardín Botanico, by taxi my taxi went up and up and up, shuddering and rattling on the cobble stone street. As we went higher and higher the houses became grander and the views more sweeping. This is where the rich live. As we crossed over the top of the hill the land was suddenly barren and desolate.

And there, in this desolate place was the entrance to the botanical gardens. It seemed incongruous to have a botanical garden in this wasteland. But this wasn’t to be an Asheville botanical garden filled with trees and green lawns and flowers, this was a cactus botanical garden, and as you can see from the photographs it was very beautiful.

When we arrived we were told that this would be a time of silence and meditation in the spirit of yoga concentration. And it was. We walked in a group in the cool sunny morning, silently, many of us taking photographs, whispering when we needed to. We entered by way of a very modern museum exhibit explaining what we would see along with a beautiful museum store and cafe. Then we walked a long gradually descending wide path past all kinds of cacti and other plants. These photograph show what we saw.
