SAN MIGUEL: GUEST HOUSE

The house I am staying in for the first and last week that I am here is a large three story house with a rooftop terrace and another large second floor  terrace and multiple bedrooms and bathrooms along with a kitchen and dining area with elegant heavy furniture.

There is a laundry room with a washer and dryer.  Since the temperature drops to 50 at night each bedroom has a gas fireplace that flickers all night and gives off a good deal of heat.  Martha turned on the heat for me and said to turn the knob to the left to lower the flames and the heat.  When I went to sleep at 9 the room was cozy warm, but by midnight it was hot.  I tried turning the knob to the left, then to the right but couldn’t reduce the flames.  By 3 the room was so hot I had thrown off the blankets and was breathing shallowly.  In the morning Martha showed me how to first press the knob in and turn it to the left and, sure enough, down the flames went.  In the bathroom that I will share with someone else the toilet kept running after flushing because a lever got caught on something.  I fixed this by bending the lever, in the process breaking it, but stopped the flow.  The knob on the door to my room can pull out completely, because of a missing screw.  I am afraid that if I pull it all the way out and can’t get it back in again I’ll be locked into my room.  I’ve noticed that plumbing fixtures and other room fixtures often break in India, Sri Lanka and now also in Mexico.

After walking around San Miguel de Allende  we went up on the rooftop and watched the sunset over the town including the brightly lit cathedral at the main square.
