IRV

Today Susie and I stopped by to visit with Irv.  Irv and I are about the same age but he hasn’t been in good health lately, first spending a month and a half in the Veterans Administration hospital near here.  It was visiting with him in the VA hospital that got me to ask for the paperwork which led to my enrolling in the VA system.  I am soon to have an ultrasound of my heart and next week will be examined for hearing aids, all free and courtesy of Uncle Sam as a reward for my two year’s in the Army, in spite of being the sorriest enlisted man you could imagine.

Irv spend four years in the navy which is why the VA is taking care of him.  I asked him a little about his life, two marriages, four sons and a daughter through marriage and finally a girlfriend who moved with him to Asheville.  She later returned to Texas but he stayed here.

Irv is an interesting person.  I wrote awhile about the how Americans have divided themselves into two camps, totally polarized, each threatened by the other.

Irv is a good example of a person who is going his own way and doesn’t fit into any camp.  We visited him in his apartment in a building housing older folks, and his living room is decked out with all kinds of little altars and shrines.  Irv goes by the Mayan calendar and his little shrines are laid out in an east/west north/south in Mayan fashion.  He is his own tribe and doesn’t fit into the groupthink of either the Republicans or the Democrats.
