WOODSON BRANCH SCHOOL

On Saturday I visited an open house for the Woodson Branch Charter School near Marshall, NC. In very traditional Madison County the Woodson Branch School’s focus is on children learning science, arithmetic, spelling and reading in an outdoor setting where children learn through doing through practical applications. There is a greenhouse and outdoor plots for each child to garden. There are chickens and bunnies and 30 acres of trails to hike on. The buildings are a barn where the children eat meals and modest sheds where classes are taught. At the open house local artists were selling things they had made as a way to help artists earn a living after the flood. It looked like a terrific place to go to school and get dirty at the same time.
