PERSONAL RESPONSE 4: RESULTS OF THE ELECTION
I am certain that huge numbers of illegal immigrant families will now be living in great fear and if Trump tries to round them all up and deport them great chaos and pain along with the intense opposition of the other half of America will follow, unlike the cowed opposition in Hitler’s Germany. But this is apparently what just over half of American citizens wanted along with delighting in Trump’s nastiness and lies and selfcenteredness. The rich will do better and the poor will do worse. Inflation will go up and down without the President having anything to do with it even though that was an issue being fought over. We will be shown to be a completely unreliable partner overseas. But the world will muddle along and my life won’t be much changed and most American’s lives won’t be much changed as we gird up for the next round of the game in two years.
I realize that my way of feeling that the election was like a game with winning being everything will seem nuts to others. But pushing the game analogy one more step, there seems to be a kind of craziness in this winning and losing being so important.
BALANCE
One thing I wonder is why we are so evenly balanced, why the elections are almost always 50/50 or rather 51/49. With all of our differences in living situations and belief systems and experiences how can we end up always being 50/50? It is almost as if there is something in our human nature that makes us balance out, shifting allegiances until we are completely balanced. Young educated women lean Democratic so young uneducated men lean Republican enough to keep things balanced and the outcome unknown. It is almost as if we balance out to increase the tension in the game, with people shifting from one side to the other just to keep the balance.
