AUTUMN LEAVES

This week, maybe because it hasn’t rained since the Helene deluge, the fall autumn colors were at their brilliant peak. Usually Asheville would be crowded with tourists come to see the fall colors and to visit the Biltmore House and to ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Smoky Mountain National Park where the views are spectacular. But Asheville is empty, the Biltmore House is closed, recovering from a thousand blown over trees, and the the Blue Ridge Parkway is impassible. So the only people seeing the leaves are locals whose minds are on flood relief and people bypassing Asheville on Interstate 40.
