EXPLORING ASHEVILLE

Today, a day after the hurricane, we drove around north Asheville and Montford stopping at the bridge across the French Broad River to marvel at the swiftness and high level of the river in which the roofs of some of the buildings such as the the roof of Second Gear second hand camping equipment store were all that was visible of the building and then the bridge over the Swannanoa where a huge hole 10 feet deep had been gouged by floor waters out of River Road which showed us that all the stores along River road, which runs along the river, must be destroyed as well.

The huge Lowes next door had been flattened and trucks were strewn down the road from the U Haul store.

We even drove as close as we could get to closed off Route 70, the highway we use all the time, which was now closed at Swannanoa were we could see the deep mud along the highway and the ruined stores of Swannanoa. I took a lot of photographs, almost as a curious tourist, while only slowly was the extent of the devastation beginning to sink in.
