INTERNET FRUSTRATION

On my last day in Bogata I got a message from American Airlines saying that even though I had a basic ticket because Miami airport was likely to be affected by hurricane Helene which was predicted to be a huge hurricane affecting all of Florida and the Southeastern United States.

But when I went on line to try and push my flight back three days I got a message saying that I couldn’t change my ticket.  I finally tried to call the American Airlines Bogata phone number and was informed that their message box was full and they weren’t taking any more calls.  I also discovered that the water in my building and maybe all of Bogata was off so I couldn’t flush the toilets or wash dishes before leaving and that irritated me.

My frustration with being unable to communicate over the Internet is a frustration that everyone has at times, so common that is hardly worth mentioning.  Companies save money by handling all questions over the Internet using artificial intelligence which is more artificial than intelligent, and when their on line chatting with a machine either gives useless answers or no answers at all and there is no way to connect with a real person, you feel helpless and as if you are being treated like a fool.

The impossibility of connecting with American Airlines meant that I went to bed on my last day not knowing if my flight from Bogata to Miami or the further flight to Asheville would be cancelled or not.  I assumed one of them would be and this unsettled me because I didn’t want to get stuck in an airport for days.
