SEPTEMBER 20, FRIDAY

CARRERA 7

A block and a half from Akros, the apartment building, where my Airbnb is on the 14th floor (if I read Google Maps right) is Carrera 7, a very wide street that is a pedestrian only street with no cars or trucks but with a narrow two way marked lane for bicycles and hand carts. There are storefronts on each side of the street but also lining the street a large number of hand carts and tented booths and articles laid out on large pieces of plastic where people hawk their wares. In the afternoon and evening crowds of people stroll along looking for something cheap that catches their eye. There are also a number of carts selling food with the fruit carts often having a blaring sound system touting their wares.

Friday afternoon I decided to go to Pasteleria La Florida, on Carrera 7, an old style cafe and bakery dating back to 1936 for lunch. On the way back from lunch I decided to make a spatial video of what the street scene on Carrera 7 looks and sounds like as a memory. Toward the end of this 30 minute video I ran into Sanchez, a 79 year old who grew up in the San Francisco and who speaks perfect English. He is an English teacher but also a convert to Tarot who loves to give Tarot readings six days a week on Carrera 7 and on Sunday at the flea market which opens onto Carrera 7. It is a way to connect with ordinary people. At the flea market he gave Susie an extended Tarot reading and we got to know him. The second part of the video is our conversation about the state of the world.
