OUR WEEK LONG ROAD TRIP
The preparations from the coming road trip with Todd and Susie to Wisconsin started today. I stayed in and in the afternoon began packing before going out with my son Tom, back from a week at the beach with his family, for dinner at a new and very authentic Mexican dinner at La Rumbha.
Packing for a car trip is much easier than packing to go overseas or even to Colorado because I can take more, including a complete set of coffee making devices and cups so that we can have morning coffee anywhere.
Tuesday morning I drove the hour to Todd and Susie’s place in Madison County. We packed all of our things in the back of her new (old) Honda CRV and drove off through Western North Carolina mountains into Tennessee.
We drove through the mountains to Newport and then got onto Interstate 40 and drove all morning to near Nashville where we ate at a Middle Eastern restaurant. Then we were on our way to Cairo, which was an intense experience, a town abandoned because of intense racial violence and prejudice. Then we were on our way to Benton, where we are staying at the Benton Motel. We ate at a fish place last night. We have read up on Benton’s connections to the Beatles George Harrison. We drove around town and saw an artist’s tribute to George Harrison lighted at the edge of the Interstate. We returned to the motel and after going to bed a furious rainstorm with pouring rain and rumbling thunder pounded us. I slept fairy well in the gravity chair but was cold until I put on a sweater and covered my blanket with two layers from the bed next to me.
