VILLAGE VISIT

This morning the two Gandhian visitors were taken to see a tribal village home and a school and I went along.

The only furniture in the village home was a charpoy, stringed bed, that is used for sleeping on at night and as a sitting place during the day.

Most of the family belongings are kept in closed tin trunks or large round containers except for a few clothes that are hung on a string to air.

A mud stove with burning firewood is in one corner of the house.

Out in the yard were maybe a dozen goats that provided milk and surrounding the house was a fence made of dried thorn bushes. Two women and some children were there with the men away in the fields.

After looking at the house we went to the next door school where there were about 20 children in uniforms and a school teacher.

The children posed for me and then were led in a dance by Shilpa which I videotaped. There wasn‘t room in the jeep so on the way back to Virampur Shilpa sat in the jeep to continue talking to the women and I sat on the floor of the back bed of the jeep and hung on as we bounced.
