HANUMAN TEMPLE

The late Saturday afternoon wedding event for 900 guests was held at the Hanuman temple built by Jitubhai the father of the bride on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. Hanuman is the monkey king who supported Rama (an incarnation of Vishnu) in his defeat of the demon Ravana who had stolen Sita, Rama’s wife. Beside the temple is a large field, colorfully enclosed with bright colored cloth walls, was an area where women got their hands painted with henna with elaborate designs called Mahendi.

In the temple itself, Mansi, the bride and Dharav, the groom, along with other family members did a variety of puja ceremonies. In the field outside, invitees, from the four corners of the world, sat in comfortable chairs and socialized with each other.

And then to loud recorded music the dancing began which became more and more frantic and insistant. This was followed by a buffet meal for everyone and socializing and dancing late into the evening.
