PUBLIC GARDENS OF TAORMINA

My last day in Taormina I visited the public gardens of Taormina. This large public garden along the cliffside of Taormina is a complete contrast to the crowded glitter of Umberto Corsa. The spacious garden was laid out by and English woman, Lady Florence Trevelyan, who left England for Sicily after having had an affair with the heir to the throne, Edward VII. She settled in and married the mayor of Taormina.

The garden with its long avenues of trees has ornamental structures called Victorian follies. There are a great variety of trees, flowers and cacti in the large garden and a feeling of quiet and peacefulness with people strolling through as they let go of the pomp of Umberto Corso.
