OCTOBER 3, TUESDAY

DUOMO

The Duomo is a many spired fairytale cathedral covered with sculptures with huge ornate iron doors with storytelling friezes. I couldn’t help thinking how expensive it must have been and as showoffy about the power of the church as the rest of the Milan was showoffy about fashion. Inside were brilliant stained glass windows and columns everywhere. But all around the inside walls were the tombs of the very important men of the church heirarchy often depicted in their ceremonial robes and high hats.

And all I could think of is what an ordinary carpenter from nowhere Galilee, who preached simplicity and sharing and love, would have thought if he had wandered in.
