ZILLICOAH BEER COMPANY

Susie was looking for a place to meet on Sunday afternoon and found the Zillicoah Beer Company in Woodfin with a Filipino food truck in Woodfin on the bank of the French Broad River, half way between Marshall and Asheville so we decided to try it out.

And it turned out to be a wonderful place. It was a beautiful golden afternoon. We sat outside at a picnic table while a band, The Bear Street String Bandits, played mountain music. The Filipino Master BBQ, chicken and rice in a hot sauce, was delicious and the band lively. People were scattered on picnic tables all the way down to the river. I think most people were there for the music.

I really like the twang of country music. The two women singers harmonized so well with each other. Two of the three men also had strong voices. But I found that I wasn’t enjoying the music or the golden afternoon for myself. I was thinking of Henny in Haarlem, Netherlands or Nora in Germany and outsiders everywhere and how they would think this was the perfect American afternoon. And afternoon like this would be a high point in their visit to Asheville, the perfect American afternoon. I was seeing it from the outside, not from the inside, and this made the afternoon somehow even more special. I wasn’t enjoying it for myself but for people far away who would had enjoyed it even more if they had been here.
