AUGUST 17, THURSDAY

STEAK

I heard that because of the vast pampas of Argentina with its herds of cattle that steak would be terrific in Montevideo, that it was served everywhere and that it was cheap and delicious. So I was looking forward to steak. But before I had time to find a steakhouse I was sick with Covid and and all I wanted to eat was chicken noodle soup and not even much of that.

So as soon as I recovered I looked for steak. On line I found an indoor covered market with lots of meat stalls at the harbor only two blocks from FROG, my grocery store of choice. Marcado del Puerto, said to be one of Montevideos “main attractions”. I went there tonight.

The market looked a little seedy with a number of cheap shops, but there were also a number of stalls or restaurants selling meat.

I ordered a ribeye steak, which had become too expensive, even at Aldi, in Asheville along with mashed potatoes. It was two inches thick and 6 inches by six inches and delicious, with a glass of red wine, which I had heard was also delicious and inexpensive in Montevideo. And both were delicious. But not cheap.

My meal was 1400 pesos which at 37 to the dollar came to $37 with tip and taxes, probably my last steak dinner in Montevideo. I’ll have to settle for Aldi when I get home.
