SUMMER IN BLACK MOUNTAIN

School is out and summer vacation has begun. France may have too many tourists, but Black Mountain, five miles from my house, is just as crowded. I went out for supper with Tom to Black Mountain. We drove by Swannanoa, which has fought zoning and looks like a dump and came to Black Mountain which was jammed with outsiders. Some are tourists here for the weekend and a good number have come to the Christian summer camps of Montreal, a Presbyterian conference center.

We had hamburgers and French fries and iced tea and beer, the all American meal in an all American tourist town while the children played with yellow trucks or smeared themselves with mud in a children’s play mud hole.
