MAY 5, FRIDAY

GRADUATION DAY

After a good breakfast we went to nearby Reynold’s Coliseum where we watched the graduation of those getting a degree in Biological Sciences. There were thousands of NC State students graduating so the all graduation ceremonies were broken up into an all day succession of departmental ceremonies.

800 Biological Science majors filed into the huge hall at 9 a.m. and took their seats. Then there were a couple of speeches, actually worth listening to, one by a young woman who graduated from the department ten years ago and now leads a non profit health program in Peru.

And then the 800 graduates lined up, row by row, and each had their name called out and received a diploma, a hug and a photograph. As with the rest of the audience we were only interested in our family graduate, and like everyone else we whooped and cheered when our graduate, Caroline, received her diploma with the only photographs we were interested in being of Caroline. After the ceremony everyone milled around outside and took family photographs. Then we all went to a very nice restaurant to eat, came back to the house for the afternoon and then had another catered celebration supper and the day was over.
