MAY 4, THURSDAY

CELEBRATING CAROLINE

Todd, Susie and I left for Raleigh at lunchtime in order to join the celebration of my granddaughter Caroline’s graduation from NC State Department of Biology with a degree in Human Biology, the premed program. For the next week there was non stop activity in Raleigh and then New York City and I wasn’t able to write. So now I am left with thousands of photographs to process and a week to make up here.

I could just skip a week and no one would notice, but since this daily writing is a way for me, as an 85 year old to keep going, skipping a week would be a signal to myself that I was running out of steam. So for myself, and entirely for myself, I’ll try to catch up.

The ride from Asheville to Raliegh took about four hours. When we got to Raleigh we discovered that Kathy, my daughter in law, had rented a house dwarfed by the red brick university dorms all around it for most of us to stay overnight in.

Before dinner Kathy led us for a walk around the part of the huge NC State beautifully landscaped campus so that we could see where Caroline had lived and felt at home for four years. Then we ate dinner and then we sat on the front porch of the rented house on a beautiful cool evening drinking margaritas as Caroline’s grandmother on the other side with her husband Richard arrived and then Lauren, Kathy’s sister, and soon, a number of Caroline’s college friends. It was a very pleasant evening.
