APRIL 1, SATURDAY

NORTH TO BERGEN

Again, we walked through the Saturday market beside the huge church, on our way to be picked up by Henny for another marvelous tour of her favorite places, this time to a town north of Haarlem on the North Sea, a town with a zoo park in the center of the city, a great variety of beautiful houses and a town center with luxury shops.

We saved a little money by having Dutch French fries with Belgian mayonnaise, hot and crisp and delicious, for lunch. After wandering through Bergen, with more hot chocolate in a warm cafe, we drove along and over the huge dikes that protect the Netherlands from the ocean to through brown thick grass covered dunes to the seaside where we walked on the beach along with hundreds of other people all bundled up to protect us against steady chilly winds off the sea.

We had more hot chocolate at a seaside cafe and then drove to Henny’s house where Bertrand had made marvelous upside down apple tart for dessert after salad and delicious chili. We talked and talked and then suddenly realized it was 11 p.m. and were driven back to our Airbnb, our home in Haarlem, by Henny.
