EATING IN FES (FEZ)
Last night was our last night in Fes and our last night eating out in style. I had been told that I should enjoy the food in Morocco. I had no idea what Moroccan food is. I have never been to a Moroccan restaurant in the United States and certainly Asheville, which seems to have food from everywhere, doesn’t have a Moroccan restaurant. I expected the discover the foods that local people like and then to eat cheaply. And I did. But what I didn’t expect was that I would discover upscale restaurants in fabulous settings that I could afford. It is not much fun eating out alone, but when Susie arrived we began to indulge. And it is these special restaurants that have been so much fun. We discovered special restaurants with wonderful ambiance in Essaouira and have reported on them. And here in the two days we have been here we have eaten in style with wonderful food.
Last night we ate at The Ruined Garden, a garden restaurant set between crumbling walls that gave atmosphere. We had a starter of puréed goat cheese and smoked eggplant which we spread on tasty Moroccan bread. And then I had a lamb tangine, a large helping of falling off the bone lamb in a cooked in a clay pot with apricots and dates and raisinm served very hot and kept hot by the clay pot.

For breakfast we ate at Cafe Clock, a restaurant hidden down an alley. We had fresh squeezed orange juice and Berber eggs cooked with goat cheese and tomatoes spiced just right, also served in a clay pot.

Tonight we ate at Fes Cafe set in another large garden with all kinds of banana trees and cacti and other plants, and a blue pool. We first had a starter of about 7 different Moroccan salads in little clay pots. And then I had veal steak with blackened diced potatoes in a sauce.

It was our last day so we went shopping through the alleys of the Fes Medina for presents when we weren’t eating sumptuous meals. In the morning we will leave for Casablanca by car.
