The south slope of Asheville twenty years ago was motor parts stores, propane outlets, transmission repair shops—all practical, no nonsense businesses with pickup trucks in the parking lots. No longer. Now South Slope is dotted with breweries with exotic names like Wicked Weed, Hi-Wire, Green Man, Foggy Mountain, Dirty Jack’s, Ben’s Tune-Up, Burial Beer, Bhramari. Next to Sunshine Sammies which offers ice cream sandwiches is the Lexington Glassworks where among bales of bundled raw glass there is a working glassblowing studio. But most of the large former warehouse is devoted to beautiful blown glass objects for sale. It is just one of the new South Slope businesses that is fascinating to visit.
