JULY 13, WEDNESDAY

MONTEREY AND BIG SUR

Ruth and Nick arranged for their son David to drive us from Monterey, where he lives, to Big Sur a beautiful drive along high bluffs with the ocean below us on the right and forested hills on the left. When it was out in the sticks and affordable a number of famous writers and photographers lived here including Henry Miller and Ansel Adams. Now just a plot of land costs millions of dollars and the artistic types have moved away, replaced by country homes of the extremely rich including Hollywood stars, that are rarely occupied.

Most of the land is unoccupied, either private land with no trespassing signs or regulated state parks. We ate a wonderful outdoor restaurant with views down the coast in Big Sur and then drove home to Santa Cruz, stopping to see the Carmel Spanish Mission along the way. It was a marvelous day.
