APRIL 25, MONDAY

WALKING, WALKING,WALKING

On Monday we decided to walk down Rue de Martyrs below our apartment toward town. One advantage of living a hill in Montmartre is that we always start our walks to town on an easy to walk downhill slope. We take the Metro back. This time we walked down to the 68 bus stop which took us on a winding tour or historic Paris to the left back where Mary Holden lives. We got lost immediately after getting off the bus and walked and walked through a area with almost no shops or people as we searched for the communist restaurant which Mary recommended.

It was on a charming street and was a wonderful old style cafe with good food and was great fun. We walked on down that pleasant avenue and then took the Metro to St. Germaine de Pres that was packed with tourists. We looked at the stalls outside the large church and then went inside by a side door. It is a beautiful church and again we were reminded that we weren’t in Swannanoa or even anywhere in the United States with a richness of color and tradition that we don’t have. The church was quiet and beautiful. We then decided to have hot chocolate and capucinno, $10 apiece, at the very elegant Cafe de Flores. We sat for a long time while Susie worked on a project and I processed photographs. Then we walked to the Seine and across the foot bridge and after an 8 hour day of walking, 5.7 miles, came back to our apartment and collapsed. Another marvelous day in Paris.
