SUNSET MOUNTAIN

After the snow, suddenly the sun came out and it warmed up for a day, warm enough to eat outside at Liberty Cafe with Susie and then to go for a walk on Sunset Mountain. Sunset Mountain is a steep mountain that rises above Asheville. The very rich have mansions at the very top, but the side of the mountain was apparently to steep to build on until recently, which new building techniques made possible, so that the houses are newly built. Many houses are huge but there are also houses on very small plots (the land must be very expensive here) that are narrow and tall and close together, some piled up five stories, in odd and beautiful building block shapes.

The houses on Sunset Mountain with its views out over Asheville to Mount Pisgah beyond, where the sun sets, disprove my assertion that all American houses look alike. On Sunset Mountain the houses are all different, a variety of American architecture from Georgian, porticoed plantation, log cabin, French chateau some with tin roofs, some with curved shingles, some with Spanish tiled roofs. The well to do live on Sunset Mountain, and they’ve spent their money on houses that are not just utilitarian but also works of art. Some are old style log cabins on one end and cube modern on the other. There are old trees everywhere and almost no traffic and no noise. It is a wonderful place to live for those who can afford it.
