SUSIE’S LAST DAY IN PAROS

This was Susie‘s last full day in Paros. Drenching rain was predicted, the sun was out all day. I am writing this from my rooftop office where I will be sitting for much of the next two weeks.

Before the rain which never came we drove around the wide Naoussa bay to a Kolibithras beach which is at the edge of a maze of sculptured rocks, nature‘s art exhibit.

And the we discovered a utilitarian looking restaurant with all kinds of inexpensive Greek food with the signs in Greek only where I can eat regularly for the next two weeks.

We had one final (for Susie, not for me) full breakfast at the Regoussis Cafe right next to Efi‘s rooms and I napped while Susie wandered the town.

And then we drove just out of town to Langoria beach where which was shallow and translucent for one last swim.

We were invited by Wolfgang, the other person staying in Efi‘s rooms along with Efi for one last grand (and expensive) meal at the square of tables at the harbor where

Efi knew and greeted everyone. Efi, all dolled up, was the life of the party. Wolfgang selected a variety of dishes and we then all ate from every selection: baby mussels, baby squid, tasty octopus, dried mackerel, shark steaks, mushroom risotto and fish eggs spread on crusty bread along with wine and beer.

Efi showed us photograph after photograph of her children, a son who draws archeological finds and a daughter who studied computer technology in England and three Egyptian children she has mothered while the parents were at work. She also showed us with great pride things she has crocheted and different delicacies that she has cooked which she has been leaving in our room every day. Wolfgang told us about her life, growing up in Naousa where one brother runs the grocery store next to us, another runs a nearby bar. But her marriage went sour and she moved moved to Athens where she worked while bringing up her kids and then in 2000 she moved back here to run Efi‘s Rooms. It finally did start to rain lightly so we came back here and Efi gave us a small bucket of fish she had dried and some figs soaked in honey for dessert.

And so ended Susie‘s last day in Paros.
